Starting Problems in 1992 Ford F-150?

I recently bought (for a dollar off a friend) a 1992 F-150 V8 5.8 automatic. Just put a new starter in, solenoid, and battery. It try's to start, but doesn't. When starter fluid sprayed, it only got about 3 seconds before dying off. Is the fuel pump bad, or the filter, or gas line maybe? No smell of gas when pumped. Also, it doesn't stop trying to start, even when the key is taken out of the ignition. Have to disconnect battery... is this the starter not disengauging or something else. Never did that before. Thanks everyone!
