Springfield XD pistols?

I'm about to buy my first pistol and I really like the way the Springfield XD feels. I've found an xd40 that's pretty cheap but I've been told to go with a 9mm for my first gun to get comfortable with as it has less recoil and bullets don't cost as much. In a previous question I had a contributed completely sh*t on the XD saying it was nothing compared to sig and glock. Keep in mind price is an issue and I will probably carry this gun in the near future.
